Alternatives to “American” don’t make sense

In Americanophobia, Blame Canada, Blame Europe, Guest Posts on December 19, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Occasionally, I read someone (who invariably has problems with Americans, or is obsequiously deferential to Canadians and Latin Americans) that says the term American should not be applied to the citizens of the USA, but to all citizens of the North & South American continents. They propose terms like “North American,” “USian” and other terms that don’t exactly roll off your tongue.

As pissed off as you might be about Americans, renaming us will not catch on, and what’s more, it doesn’t make sense:

1. The USA is not the only United States country. Mexico’s official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos or United Mexican States (their term for the USA is Estados Unidos de America). So calling the USA “the US” is as egregious an error as calling it “America.”

2. The USA was the first sovereign nation in the Americas, and thus can lay claim to the name “America.” (Don’t like that? Should’ve declared your independence first)

3. No other country in the Americas has the word “America” in their name.

4. No other country national is called “American.”

5. People might say “americano/americana” in Latin America with respect to their residency in the Americas, but that’s in Spanish. Until we start, in English, calling Germans “deutch”, Armenians “hai,” and Croatians “hrvati,” I don’t see the point of adopting names in other languages into English usage.

6. “North American” is inaccurate since Canada is also in North America. (So is, arguably, Mexico)

7. “USian” could arguably apply to Mexicans. (See #1 above)

8. “Unitedstatesofamerican” is just stupid. (Even though it is the most accurate next to American)

9. Try calling a Canadian “American” and see what their reaction is.

10. I have a hard time imagining that the term “American,” which has become a dirty word worldwide recently, wants to be claimed by other nationalities in the hemisphere, who share nothing more with the USA other than the accident of geographic proximity and land bridge in Panama.

PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT AMERICA IS A CONTINENT NEED TO DIE!

  1. I think the desire to change our country’s name is yet another tool they use to bully us and to make us feel guilty for being American. Ironically enough, the same ones who protest against the name “America/Americans” use the term “stupid Americans” to define us. So, they aren’t really serious. And I’m convinced that they don’t believe in what they’re doing anyway. It’s just their strategy to forceably “deflate our egos”.

Those Americans who truly hate literally all-things-American will naturally submit and surrender to this inanity. And as you’ll see on several places on the net, Americans are beginning to call themselves, USians, USAians, and the like. Just google it. It will shock you if it doesn’t sadden you.

  2. I have a couple friends and a sister-in-law who are Canadian.

In all cases, they refer to us as “Americans.”

Especially in the punchline of the joke (apparently popular in Canada):

If someone who speaks two languages is bilingual, and someone who speaks three languages is trilingual, what do you call a person who speaks only one language?

    An American!

In fact, that sister-in-law recently said that she’s glad that she and her family will be able to “make it back to America for Christmas.”

(Hmmm … Reading that sentence, it occurs to me that she’s Jewish, too, but that’s a different can of worms.)

  3. Wickle, welcome!

The Canucks are just as bilingual as any American is. They have successfully bastardized the meaning of “bilingual”. If you aren’t FLUENT in two languages, you cannot call yourself bilingual. So, if one goes by the strict definition, most people in the world are…

    Americans!

    *wide grin*

  4. Too funny! Okay, take a step down memory lane with me;
I was part of a group of people that were attending a meeting of the campus political club. All of us had been invited by the Professor that was the club sponsor.
    Anyways…
As I was explaining the basic foundations of philosophical Libertarianism I was interrupted by another of the guest speakers. She was the “Socialist” representative just for information.

“What did you just say? Don’t you mean USAmerican?” I said no, and proceeded to explain things much as you did above.

That got me branded as a sexist, hillbilly/redneck, misogynist, and unethical by virtually every other participant except the John Birch Society guy.

That was by other “USAmericans” not by any of the many foreign students that were there.

I went on to confirm their suspicions when I quoted Teddy Roosevelt’s commentary regarding hyphenated Americans…

  5. 1. Actually “UMS” or “UM”, never “US”. I hate to say this, but some mexicans don´t know the oficial name of their country. And when they say “Unitd States”, they always refer to “USA”, never to Mexico.

    2. Martin Waldseemuller is the only one who can lay claim to the name “America”. Or their descents,if there where any.

    3. Totally true. But that´s not what we´re arguing. Our point is that the first use of the word “America” was to refer to the “New World”, “the West Indies”,etc.

    4. No country national is called “european”, “asian”, “african”. Wonder why?

    5. But you are doing it. And for yourself. For example, the song “Americana” by the offspring, to name one.

    6. Arguably, Mexico? Didn´t you say “North America” is a continent, divided in 23 countries?

    7. UMSian or UMian, never USian.

    8. Yes, It is stupid. Like Connecticutian, and some of you don´t even know the term.

    9. Try Calling a Mexican “Unitedstatian” and see what “his” reaction is.

    10. Rusia, China, India, Pakistán share nothing but the accident of geographic proximity. Yet, they are all in Asia.

I don´t hate “América”(with accent Mark), because for me, is a continent, I don´t hate USA people. Because I have friends over there, I am Christian, and there are Christians over ther too.
I think what really bother us (spanish speakers) is that while we accept the ambiguity of the words “America” and “American”, you (English speakers) deny it.

This is The Letter From Jamaica, written by Simon Bolivar( you have little knowledge in Spanish) It is so delicious the way he uses the word “America” and “americanos” to refer the whole continent and not the USA.

If telling the truth, makes anti-USA, then I am.

But after all this information, answer me:

who has stolen the identity of whom?

  7. David,
I do speak Spanish, but how is that in any way relevant? I know Latin Americans refer to themselves as americans (note the lower-case a); that doesn’t mean English-speakers or the rest of the world do.
I didn’t know that your identification with a set of *continents* was so integral to your identity. In fact, I’m pretty sure if the USA weren’t so wealthy and culturally dominant, you wouldn’t give a shit at all.

  8. Thanks to the wealth and cultural domain of the USA, more and more people in the world call you and your fellows “Americans”, including spanish speakers. I am aware of it. And that´s the reason for which i accept the ambiguity of the term.

I just don´t see the point of denying that the original usage of the word “America” was mean for the whole western hemisphere. Antique maps don´t lie:

There are different continents models: 7,6,5,4.
I have reached to the conclusion that none of them is wrong, since there is no universal definition of continent.
I think you can create a “blog entry” comment about the subject.

It shows the freemasonry influence on the USA government.

These folks are romanians. Are they anti-USA or no? Was of your knowledge the existence of this video? Have you comment about it in another blog? I would like to know your opinion.

Now, some people say this doesn’t matter, and it’s racist to even bring it up.
But think about it – the white Americans form the historical majority of this nation. Were we ever asked if we wanted to become a minority? Did we get a chance to vote on it? Did Congress ever have a straight up or down vote on the abolition of the historical majority of this nation?
Is the loss of the white majority a good idea ? Will it make this a better country? Will other racial groups get along with each other?
