Karla Homolka: A Victim or a Murderer?

In The Crime Library on August 29, 2005 at 2:15 PM

Take a look at the below video. More lies coming out of Karla’s mouth. And much worse, she’s still blaming the crimes on everyone but herself. While she says that she’s “remorseful”, she’s still playing the “victim card”.

The following video was provided by CBS News World.

You’ll need to view the video in full screen to see the English subtitles.

Radio-Canada’s Joyce Napier interviews convicted killer Karla Homolka. (Runs 12:42)

I love the way she complains about the “over sensationalized media” taunting her and her little criminal cohorts in prison that she still has relationships with. Is she pulling out another victim card here? Has the media caused her trouble? What about the trouble her victims were in when Karla and her “partner in crime” killed them slowly? What about the victims that are still alive: the families?

Here are the transcripts from the interview.

Look how she continues to lie:

HOMOLKA:
I was an exemplary detainee. There is no doubt about that. I did all my programs. I even did those that weren’t part of my rehabilitation program. I did volunteer work. I went to school. I helped other women. I never received an internal report. I did all kinds of things. I went to school. I got my BA. I improved my French.

The Crime Library depicts a different picture of her:

The National Parole Board ruled Jan. 17, 2003 that Karla Homolka must stay in prison until her sentence is completed in July of 2005. The board’s decision represented the third time that Homolka’s request to be transferred to a half-way house was refused.

Two reasons for the refusal were given. One reason was her sexual relationship with another convict at the Ste.-Anne-des-Plaines detention center. The other reason stated by the board was her refusal to participate in rehabilitation programs. The Toronto Star reported on Jan. 19, 2003, that “Commissioners noted she had not yet started therapy for her role as a sexual aggressor and showed little interest in other rehabilitation programs.” Adding to the scandal, the Toronto Sun published photos it bought from Homolka’s former lesbian lover when the two women were housed in a prison in Quebec.

The lesbian lover apparently was guilty of the exact same things Karla was: helping her husband “molest and kill” other women.Karla’s Feeling Remorse?

I have my doubts about that for a few reasons.

NAPIER:
You said a few minutes ago that you will always have to live with what you did. Do you feel any remorse?

HOMOLKA:
Yes.

NAPIER:
How does it manifest itself, that remorse?

HOMOLKA:
I cry often. I can’t forgive myself. I think about what I did and often I think I don’t deserve to be happy because of what I did.

NAPIER:
How do you judge now what you did? When you think about it, how do you judge yourself?

HOMOLKA:
What I did was terrible and I was in a situation where I was unable to see clearly, where I was unable to ask for help. Where I was completely overwhelmed in my life and I regret it enormously because now I know I had the power to stop all of that. But when I was living through it, I thought I had no power.

NAPIER:
To stop even what you did? You didn’t have the power to stop yourself?

HOMOLKA:

Well I didn’t initiate the crimes. I followed.
Yes, I did what I did but ….

Then what do you call this?

Paul was a nocturnal creature, driving around, looking for girls, and staying out all night. He raped a young athlete, an older woman, and a young career woman. He spied on a waitress and videotaped her undressing and grooming herself. He raped a young student on campus. One day Paul was out driving around when Karla called him on his cell phone. She whispered for him to hurry home, she had a wedding gift for him. When he arrived, he saw that Karla had used the same drugs that killed her sister on a young girl that had been Tammy’s friend. They videotaped each other having sex with the girl, and got about 15 minutes of tape, that Paul was thrilled with. He had everything, and everything he did had to have style and attitude. He was almost comic, as a serial killer, like Patrick Bateman in
Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho. In a twist of fate, the police seized the book from the couple’s home. Many people had the opinion that Paul He had a music room in the den, with thousands of dollars of music equipment. He wrote rap lyrics, in a blue notebook, and nicknamed himself Young Hype. He thought that Vanilla Ice was a great rapper and when someone called him that one day on vacation, he was convinced he could become famous and get Madonna to sponsor his tour. In reality, his voice was whiny, and his songs were about how to score with chicks and how he should be feared. He made his little voice overs and showed them to the girls they managed to get into their home. He would sing to them and won the trust of several, which wound up being drugged and raped and videotaped.

And then we’ve got this:

June 7,
1991
- Karla invites Jane Doe, age 15, for a “girls night out” but her and Paul are actually planning to drug and rape her that night When Karla and Jane return home from an evening of shopping and dinner Karla begins plying her with drinks Eventually she adds Halcion sleeping pills to her drinks. Paul in the meantime is out, impatiently waiting for the message on his answering service that Jane Doe is unconscious When he gets the call he returns home and then he and Karla begin raping Jane while they both take turns holding the videocamera The next morning Jane is sick and vomiting but has no idea she had been raped She just feels embarrassed because she thought she couldn’t hold her liquor – it was her first time she tried drinking alcohol…..

And this:

Aug 10,
1991
- Karla again invites Jane Doe over to spend the night so she and Paul can drug and rape her This time, in the middle of the act, Paul notices that Jane isn’t breathing In a panic, Karla phones 911 and tells the emergency operator that someone in her house has stopped breathing A few minutes later, however, Paul notices that she is in fact breathing and says everything is fine Karla phones back to the 911 operator and gets the request for an emergency crew canceled, after she assures the operator that everything is alright…..

To top that off, you’ve got the videos of her enjoying every minute of her sexual and demeaning empowerment over her victims.

Read more from Frances Farmers Revenge.

Secondly, I don’t see this as being remorseful. If you have a good look at her video, she doesn’t appear too remorseful there either.

While technically she too is a victim, she needs to take responsibility of her crimes and apologize like she means it.

But now she’s out of her cage, and already causing others to “question her”, if you will:

Karla’s boss raises concerns — Homolka’s Rehabilitation Questioned

Karla Homolka Blames the Cops and the Media?! ?!

….And she’s also violating her probationary conditions….

Many Quebecan murderer apologists out there are crying for everyone to just leave her alone and to give her a second chance. Karla and her lawyer are receiving a lot of emotional and written support. To all you hippies out there: Last time I checked, when you murder someone, there are consequences. And these are just one of the many. As far as I’m concerned, she hasn’t been punished yet.

  1. wow jaded, thanks for all the information, interview and timeline..it is so much right now to process all but I was sickened by so much of it.. I can see how she presents herself with her quiet little voice..yeah right…she ain’t fooling anyone here. As a canadian I am ashamed that this POS is out on the street because the crown was too weak to readjust or null the plea bargain that we all know was breached by KH lies. She is what she is and I question the intelligence of her peranst. I am sorry but no-can-do…if you murder my child through torture and rape you are NOT my child: the spawn of the anti-christ perhaps.

It further sickened me when the ‘experts’ liken this trash to a nazi camp survivor that one comment degraded anything nazi camp survivors/victims endured- SHAME ON THEM…they had her confused, she should be likened to AHitler for sure, wrong team right horror.

  2. KH is a disgrace to women everywhere….and an embarrassment of the Canadian judicial process…I cannot even imagine what the families are going through and I wish them much peace if they can find some…I hope KH never goes on with her live for that would be an insult to those lives she took…bash bash bash bash…

  3. what also ticks me off is Aileen Wuornos was dubbed…a monster…and she is a victim in my eyes…and this litle miss thang with her sweet little voice is yet to have any such ill treatment and she is far worse..in that there is not one mitigating circumstance why she did what she did..at least with Aileen I can see that she was a broken, damaged and traumatized child/women who society raped…what is KH excuse???

  4. It’s not Ontario as much as Quebec. In my opinion, Quebec is a Disney World for criminals. If ya wanna commit a crime, go there!

Their prisons are like college dormitories, and they appear to be more concerned about the interests of the criminals then the victims.

What the hell is up with Quebec?????

  5. I feel sorry for AW too. Very sorry, actually. Maybe instead of death, I would have given AW life with therapy, schooling, jobs — all in prison. But LWOP to keep it fair. Did she only kill prostitute clients?

But we just can’t assume that because we have no info on KH’s past, that she was brought up in a functional environment. She doesn’t take responsibility for her crimes as AW did, and for that reason, I wish more evil/punishment on KH.

  6. jaded, I have looked extensively into KH past and although I do not believe there is ever such a thing as a completely ‘functional’ family hers did not seem too out of the norm and quiet average but nothing suggesting a predisposition to who she became…maybe the mundane of her life compelled her need for excitement..who knows..as far as I know all AW victms were clients though there is some debate from the families..and there would be as they do not want any negative comments about their deceased ones..but her case fascinates me in that way as her victims were also perps…and NO ONE talks about that …okay I always do LOL…but lets use the word victim for those who deserve it..how many serial killers can say that their victims are perps too?…and I agree DP was excessive force for AW and a clear example of society’s ability to get rid of the evidence of its own corruption and inhumanity..as long as she was alive she reminded people of how many abused her and how many failed her….as a child welfare worker..it appalls me what she went through..I know alot of folks say..’well all kinds of children are abused and do not do what she did”.. my only response is how many can say they were abused like she was????? and THAT, I believe is the difference..we cannot lump all abuse events under one umbrella but hers was one of the worse childhoods I ever read about…it is so pathetic and sad…she is truly a sociopath in that society created her..society did NOT create KH…like you jaded her lack of remorse makes me ill…

as for quebec..they have separate rules than the rest of canada and it pisses alot of the rest of us off…that could be why they all go there..

  7. jaded, I have looked extensively into KH past and although I do not believe there is ever such a thing as a completely ‘functional’ family hers did not seem too out of the norm

Bub, you can read about her past until the cows come home, and you’ll never find out what happened! Nor will we ever find out why Scott Peterson killed. The only person you can find that out from is Karla herself. Do you actually believe that if a traumatic past is not documented, that it didn’t happen? That’s a logical fallacy, right there!

That is too simplistic an approach to think that if one doesn’t openly discuss their problems, that there were none.

Child abuse comes in many different forms. Have you ever looked into BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder)? Read cantstandnuts’ explanaition of BPD here. There’s more documentation on the web.

okay I always do LOL…but lets use the word victim for those who deserve it..

Anyone who commits such heinous crimes as KH IS/WAS a victim. People aren’t born evil.

You need to look beyond the surface here.

Just as Aileen Wuornos CHOSE to be a prostitute, Karla Homolka CHOSE to be Paul Bernardo’s partner in crime and CHOSE to partake in the submissive role of his sadomasochistic violent attacks.

Same thing. The both made bad choices. Psychologically speaking, these type of bad choices that people make – what they are trying to do under the surface is relive their past.

I’m sure you’ve heard of women who “marry their fathers” and men who “marry their mothers”. These kinds of destructive relationships that people (by choice) commit themselves to happens for a very good reason. Why does that woman (generally speaking) keep going after men who hit her?

People are more complex than this. Everyone deals and copes with their pain in varying ways. Some survivors of child abuse cope with their beef by dedicating the rest of their lives to helping others.

The most famous way people cope is through denial (repression/forgetting).

Everyone tries to find an outlet for their pain. So you’ll find abuse survivors where their pain manifests itself physically, internally, or externally.

So, what makes serial killers tick? It’s more complex than what meets the eye.

but hers was one of the worse childhoods I ever read about…

I just heard some tidbits about AW, and it was enough for my heart to drop on to the floor. I feel rage. I was thinking to myself that I’d probably “go out on the prowl”, re-place myself in a similar position and kill too. I feel the same way as you, bub.

BUT! Even though my husband isn’t the type to look for sex with a prostitute, if that were my hubby that she killed (thinking about this on the victim’s side), I do believe that justice was served re: AW. I don’t have very strong feelings about the Death Penalty. But I believe that LWOP would be justice in the sense that – that is what the victims families would have wanted.

In any event, whether we “feel” for any killer’s past or not, we also need to look at the victim and just as importantly, the victim’s families.

You need to understand that prostitution is a MUTUAL AGREEMENT and a MATURE AGREEMENT between two consenting adults. While some men who look for prostitutes are really mean and treat their women like scum, there are also men out there who just want a quick bang in the bed. It is not fair to say that these men are evil.

  8. it appear that I was not clear again…I do not know where in my post it suggests that if something is not documented it does not happen that would be quite ignorant of me for sure…but being that dysfunctaional families/abuse and aftermaths are my area of ‘expertise’ even if informally that ‘things’ are not pleasant in pleasantville..as my post suggests I cannot find a thing even with such a search, I NEVER said there was nothing ???

when I was talking about KH being a victim I meant while she was with PB committing the crimed and as she claims to be a battered wife…and again I do not know where you took that from my post perhaps you could have asked for clarification before assuming to know what my position was.I really did not know you assumed me to be so ignorant or irresponsible to think or better yet NOT THINK. As for childhoods KH was never the victim AW was, one cannot hold that much information.

and you and I will disagree, AW didnot choose to be a prostitute ,society made her one and I find it really offensive that anyone would NOT understand THAT dyamnic yet YOU suggest to me I should look deeper..interesting.. I will leave it at that as it is not my place to educate you on the dyanmics of trauma and how it manifests itself I am already well versed in it personally and professionaly and will never hold KH and AW in the same category.
Having lived in a few female group homes and being incarcerated twice I have met quite a few prostitutes and I can assure you KH they aint.

  9. As for childhoods KH was never the victim AW was, one cannot hold that much information.

It is here where we disagree, bub.

OK…. if you want to continue this debate, please tell me how society created AW, and how society plays no part in the role of KH.

It just could be that AW suffered MORE than KH. Because I am aware of the past of AW, I (just as you do) pity the woman. When I hear about the detailed past of any Serial Killer I pity them too.

The fact of the matter is…. you could be a social worker and have studying greatly regarding the mental health of others, but that does not give you the details of Karla Homolka’s childhood.

Point blank. KH and what she went through as a little girl — we will never know what happened to her or what motivated her to partake in those crimes.

What I’m trying to say is that “something happened”. Until you know what that “something” was, you have no right to assume anything about how Karla grew up. You have no right to say that she grew up with less pain than AW. You just can’t. It’s not logical.

Mental health professionals have spoken to the media taking “no information” as a justification to say that she has had a happy childhood. They have met her parents and said that they are “nice people”. But if you’re a social worker, then you know that just because someone acts or “looks nice” doesn’t mean diddly squat!

What I believe to be the probem here with this debate between you and I is – is that you are picking and choosing. And hun, we all do that! Have you ever heard of this expression:

““We don`t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” – Anais Nin

EVERYBODY who has gone through something similar to that of any defendant is naturally going to have bias for particular cases.

I think you have bias. And you are not wrong for this. I feel for what you have gone through and realize that you have your reasons for feeling the way you do. I even wish (if I could) I could help you get through what you’re going through.

I am unconnected emotionally to these cases, so I feel that I can be more impartial.

This is not to say one is ignorant, stupid, irresponsible yada yada yada —- our words are opinions – nothing more; nothing less. And our past experiences shape our values and the way we view things.

If you want to see the irrational side of me where I cannot be an impartial juror, I would use the Pring-Wilson case as an example of that.

Anyway, my opinions are strong and it may just be that I come off as arrogant. But I try my best not to hurt anyone in the process.

But in any event, I guess, a debate can only go on for so long. At a certain time, the “agree to disagree” is not a bad idea, ya know.

  10. I was an exemplary detainee.

What? You were an exemplary detainess, like you tried to sneak an extra carry-on handbag onto the plane and they pulled you out of line? No, you weren’t a detainee. You were an incarcerated convict. You’re also a felon rapist and murderer.

Didn’t you have to learn that when you got your BA from Penitentiary State University?

  11. LMAO!

She was talking out of her ass, is still talking out of her ass, and will always be talking out of her ass.

  12. In what way was Homolka a victim!?

Dud you know that the Crown attorney (prosecutor) responsible for her sentencing deal also, as justice minister, wanted to introduce Sharia law in Ontario a few years ago?

Also, she didn’t just kill her sister, but also, along with Bernardo, raped her.

And I don’t believe that Bernardo killed those girls. Homolka even testified that she knows he killed them while she was at work because she kept coming home and seeing them still alive and so insulted him for being such a coward and said, “What are you gonna do? Keep them as pets!?” Then she says one day she came home and they were dead.

In strictly legal terms, his conviction is a travesty. It should be obvious that she has no conscience, that she had the will to kill, that she entrapped the victims, and according to her own testimony she wanted them dead. There was no evidence against him besides her testimony, and she said he wouldn’t kill them.

In an ideal world, she would have gotten the death penalty for murder. and he would have gotten life in jail for rape and assisted murder in exchange for testifying against her.

But that was impossible in the political environment, with Homolka-sympathizers in the Department of Justice, and “women’s groups” and urinalists all full of sympathy for the poor little misunderstood sweetheart.

By the way, her name now is apparently either Karla Leanne Teale, or Karla Leanne Bordelais, unless she’s changed it again.

An update on her post-prison career:

    http://brianakira.wordpress.com/2008/06/29/happy-canada-day-to-whichever-country-celebrates-canda-day/

  13. Re: “In an ideal world…”

    Of course, figure of speech.

In a real ideal world the crimes wouldn’t have happened. But since we live in a fallen world, then “in an ideal world” they should both have been taken out back and shot dead and been thrown in a ditch.

  14. I stand exactly where you stand regarding crimes and punishment. So, don’t worry. I do not defend Karla… at all! Victim of the past or not.

  15. Any person, man or woman, whom can deliberately put their family in harms way, is a deviant and should be put away for the rest of their lives. There should be no mercy for this woman Karla, she had no mercy for her virgin sister. That to me, is true evil!!! I watched a program on t.v. tonight called Wicked Attraction and i couldn’t believe what i was seeing. SHE was NOT a victim but it looks like she did a terrific acting job, portraying the poor, abused wife…who fell under the spell of a monster, Paul Bernardo!!! Give me a break! Whoever gets involved with this manipulative woman, knowing her past and not caring, deserves what they get. You play with fire and you are going to get burned. I hope Karla and Paul burn in hell for what they did to those poor girls!!!

  16. is there any way to see the videos?

  17. I totally agree with the post, except Quebec citizens are Quebecers, not Quebecans.
